Macramé originated with 13th-century Arabic weavers who used knotting to finish textiles, with the word possibly coming from the Arabic "macramia" or Turkish "makrama". It spread to Europe through the Moorish conquest of Spain, where it was developed by nuns and later popularized by English royalty and sailors, who carried the craft globally. The craft saw significant resurgences in the Victorian era and the 1960s/70s hippie movement, and has recently been revitalized in modern home decor.
