FREE RANGE NATURAL EGGS

Moose Meadows Farm eggs are produced by FREE RANGE "ladies" who are of a variety of types and given the option of going out daily. Our eggs, although not graded, are sorted and mixed by size. The yolk colour is indicative of what the birds are eating.... 100% natural, vegetable based pellets, grain (wheat, oats, barley and corn), vegetables, fruit and in the snow free months a mix of natural seeds and grasses.

The benefits of purchasing local free range eggs are the following:
* they can be considered more environmentally friendly as they are typically from local sources;
* by purchasing local products, you are contributing to the local economy;
* the eggs are fresher
* the chickens are able to eat a diet closer to their natural diet - this includes bugs and fresh greens;

* the chickens are able to exhibit "normal" behaviours resulting in less stress;
* the chickens get sunlight, fresh air, and other things that contribute to a healthier animal;
* the chickens have more mentally stimulating lives; surely something they appreciate

Our eggs are available at the farm gate (house) or by giving us a call.
PRICE: $4.00 / DOZ. (effective November 1, 2009)
Note: We often do not have enough eggs to meet the demand.

WILD SYRUPS & JELLIES

Moose Meadows Farm produces a variety of different syrups and jellies throughout the year. Focusing on "wild" and non-timber forest products, all products are available on a limited basis. Prior to ordering, please call for availability.

Wild food is said to be a staple for the poor, for the rich a delicacy and for the frugal, a delight. At any rate, we hope you enjoy any one of these culinary adventures.

DANDELION BLOSSOM SYRUP / JELLY

This syrup/ jelly is produced using the beautiful yellow blossoms of the common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) collected from our U-Pick Blossom Fields in May. Introduced to North America in earlier times, dandelions are typically considered an aggressive, weedy species. Dandelion is from "dent-de-lion", or lion's tooth, in reference to its leaves. The plant is entirely edible - the leaves as greens (in salads) and the root as a vegetable or a coffee substitute. The syrup and jelly have a delicate flavour that resembles honey - it is lovely in tea, on warm biscuits, ice cream or pancakes.

INDIAN BLUE PEAFOWL

Indian Blue Peafowl or Commn Peafowl or Blue Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) can be viewed at Moose Meadows Farm. Although these birds are typically called "peacocks", the peacock is actually only the male. The females are peahens and the chicks, peachicks. Peafowl are originally from India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan although they have been introduced to many areas of the world and these populations are now feral. Each July / August, the peacock sheds all of his train ("tail") feathers during a molt and they regrow over the winter months. The peacock is the national bird of India.

Peacock feathers have a variety of uses. Placed in a vase for home decor, they stand on their own or in combination with long dried reeds or catails. The feathers can also be incorporated into costumes, masks, head dresses, feather fans, and unique and colourful jewelry (earrings, pendants, necklaces). The side fibres are often used in fishing fly tying.
